This November Jack celebrated his 4th birthday. In comparison to some of his other birthdays it was pretty low-key. We're still new here so we don't really have any community yet, and the one classmate he wanted to have over for a play date was out of town. We were also leaving a few days after his birthday for the States so it felt a bit... overlooked unfortunately. I was feeling a bit down about this but then later when I looked through Jack's 4 year old eyes I saw how awesome the day was. I got to play with my brother. And I got a mighty pups cake with marshmallows- his one request.
I didn't end up with a lot of pictures of the day, because of life. But here's what I do have.
Licking the bowl clean after helping Mio make my birthday cake.
Watching football with Daddy and Ben. And practicing my lineup stance.
Mighty Pups Cake complete with marshmallows and 'frost'.
At 4 Jack is pretty much the same as he's always been, just a bit bigger. He loves rough housing. He loves to bake and knows exactly what we need for most recipes: flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla. He loves to play with others and is always trying to include everyone in his games. He's convinced he isn't 'very good at sleeping', even though he still takes a 2 hour nap most afternoons. He loves books and cars and building things. He loves playing with his brother. He knows his letters, how to spell his names and loves to count everything (in French and English). He has a fondness for coins. He will tell you that he 'loves buttons and switches and levers'.
It's crazy to me that he's already 4. It seems that the little years have gone by in a flash. I still remember fondly the days when he was my baby buddy and we would have picnics in our English garden, or walk into town for a coffee and cake. Even though he's grown he can still fit on my lap and I can still manage to carry him (for a short distance). It's hard to believe that one day he will be bigger than I am. So I soak in these days when he does still want a cuddle, when I can still fit his hand in mine, (and go to the gym so I can have the strength to carry him as long as he wants me to).
Jack, you are such a blessing to us. You are the one who paved the way for your brothers and taught us how to be parents. We pray that you feel celebrated and loved today and every day for the blessing that you are, that you stay humble and kind, that you know the love of the Lord and chase after him, that you have a fierce love for your brothers and become the best of friends.
We love you, Jack. Happy 4th Birthday!
